Second generation of know-how in chemistry

Finnester Coatings is a family business founded almost two decades ago by brothers Hokkanen, Ari and Mika. Ari followed his father into the world of polymer chemistry and graduated as M.Sc.Eng in chemistry. Years at Neste Polyester revealed many of the challenges in composite industry. Ari believed he could solve many problems in composite industry by developing new types of coating products. Finnester Coatings was founded for this purpose. The paint and coating market had been unchanging for a long period of time and many products were still based on technologies from the 60’ and 70’s.

 

The years as innovator for composite industry

Coming into the new millenium, Finnester Coatings, led by Ari Hokkanen, was in close development cooperation with Finnish composite manufacturers. Durester, a whole family of tooling and coating products was born. This line of products brought along significant savings in time and money for composite manufacturers. As a result of the development work, a surface finished with Durester coatings was smoother and cured faster than the competition. This led to significantly reduced finishing work. Hokkanen and his team moved from molds and plugs into developing coatings for ready-made composite objects and PURE family of coatings was born.

 

Not running out of innovation

In recent years, the pace of innovation has accelerated. For manufacturing and finishing epoxy-based composites, a new generation epoxy, DERA, and polyurea-based PHERON were developed. Both have groundbreaking qualities. DERA is an epoxy without the characteristic brittleness. PHERON is a new generation polyurea allowing the processing time to be extended up to an hour, even in freezing temperatures. These new technologies entailed new opportunities for coating different construction materials, such as sandblasted iron and timber.

The most remarkable, grounbreaking technologies emerged recently, when Ari and his team started to explore the opportunities in ceramic technology. Several world-class innovations emerged:

  • HYBRID technology enabling a compound of ceramic material and organic adhesives. The first ceramic coating in the world, which does not need extreme heat for curing. It cures in room temperature. This has enabled totally new applications for ceramic coatings. Decotile ceramic coating for renovating tiled surfaces without demolition work has started to conquer the world.
  • A fire retardant technology based on ceramifying polymers. HybridRED, a fire retardant coating, outdoes every competitor globally due to its’ unique qualities. It is the only decorative coating for the external body shell of passenger rolling stock, compliant with the requirements of the standard EN45545-2 (EX1A, R7, HL3), but not compromising on mechanical strength or weatherability.
